Ja Rule's debut album Venni Vetti Vecci was released in 1999, peaking at number 3 on the Billboard 200 with 184,000 copies sold in its first week. It eventually reached platinum status in the US due to the popularity of the hit single, 'Holla Holla', which reached #35 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Rule 3:36 (2000). Rule 3:36 is the second studio album by AmericanrapperJa Rule, released on October 10, 2000, by Murder Inc. and Def Jam. The album features guest appearances from Christina Milian, Lil' Mo, Shade Sheist and Jayo Felony, with producers Irv Gotti, Ty Fyffe, Lil' Rob and Damizza, among others, contributing to the album. The album marked a significant change in Ja Rule's musical style, shifting from the Hardcore hip hop he became known for with his first album to a more radio-friendly pop rap oriented sound to greater success, debuting at the top of the Billboard 200 with 276,000 copies sold.

Rule 3:36 went on to be certified Triple Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), and spawned four singles; all of which achieved varying degrees of chart success. The most successful single, Put It On Me featuring Lil' Mo and Vita, peaked at #8 on the Billboard Hot 100 and marked Ja Rule's first top 10 single.

Background[edit]

Rule 3:36 contains the song titled 'F**k You', which is titled 'Furious' as a clean version for radio play. The song received average airplay, and is also on the soundtrack to The Fast and the Furious (where it is titled 'Furious') and has featured its trailers from the first installments of the film series, with using the words 'Do it fast, do it furious'. It is considered one of the album's highlights despite its non-radio and offensive tone. The disc is still mostly radio-friendly pop-themed music unlike his later albums, which contain disses of a more dark tone. The album still contains explicit material, and was made in a clean version which only removes profanity and drug/violent lyrics are left in, although some profanity like the words 'hoes' and 'ass' are also left in.

Reception[edit]

Rule 3:36 has sold 276,000 during its first week.[9] Initial critical response to Rule 3:36 was average. At Metacritic, which assigns a normalized rating out of 100 to reviews from mainstream critics, the album has received an average score of 56, based on 5 reviews.[10] The album has become a certified three-time platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).[11]
